Frequently Asked Questions
How deep do we excavate for block paving?
We generally excavate up to 10 inches when laying block paving. This will allow us to add a minimum of 250mm sub base which is Type 1 Foundation base, membrane sheeting and any drainage solutions if required. Compaction is done with a 10tonne roller to ensure the new sub base is locked solid in place to avoid subsidence after a year or two.
How do we install paving in Orpington?
We will always excavate the area, lay membrane sheeting, fit a new base foundation. On top of the base foundation we will use either a grit base or a river washed sharp sand base depending on the permeability requirements. The block paving is laid on top of the grit or sand base, with options for herringbone, 45degree or 90 degree and options on bordering styles. Once its laid, we will cut it in using a diamond blade saw or block splitters, joint it with a kiln dried sand and machine vibrate compact the lock the paving in place. We will top up the jointing once this is done to finish off.
Block Paving Thickness
A question we often get asked is what should the thickness be for block paving. On normal driveways or pathways, we will always recommend the 50mm variant. It is more than capable of withstanding any standard vehicular traffic, for places that will often have a heavy goods vehicle or lorry parked on, we recommend 60mm pavers which provide a bit more durability against the sheer long term weight. Laying patterns and colours are generally the same regardless of the thickness choices.
Types of paving
The most common types of paving products we install are standard block paving, which is 200 x 100 x 50mm, however there are other options we install which is the Tegula range, available in 3 different sizes and laid differently, along with permeable options for both standard paving and Tegula paving.
